Respite care

Temporary service to ease the burden on family caregivers

As a family caregiver, you are sure to know that it is impossible to be present 24 hours a day. Occasionally, you have to go to the doctor or hairdresser’s yourself, or are due to be hospitalised for a longer period, or simply wish to relax and go on holiday.

To ensure that your family member is best looked after in your absence, you can take advantage of our respite care service, irrespective of whether your absence is planned or arose unexpectedly and you need to ensure that care arrangements are made for your family member swiftly and without further ado.

Respite care or short-term care - what is the difference between the two?

Respite care provides replacement care when family caregivers are on vacation or ill. Starting July 1, 2025, this service will be available without the previous six-month home care requirement. The maximum duration of respite care has increased to eight weeks.

Short-term care offers the option of moving into a care facility for a limited time. This may be necessary if there are problems with home care or after a hospital stay, for example. The maximum duration of short-term care is also eight weeks.

Care insurance funds provide a joint budget of up to €3,539 per year for both types of benefits to people in need of care from care level 2 and above. This allows for more flexible use of funds and combination of respite and short-term care. Previous transfer regulations no longer apply. This means benefits can be claimed for up to 16 weeks per year.

Respite care can be provided either in your home by our ambulatory care service or as residential care in our care and nursing homes, where we offer respite care depending on the situation. This means that a current vacancy can be allocated to a person in need of complementary care.

Respite care is necessary or expedient if

  • the caregiver is unavailable due to urgent commitments such as visits to the doctor etc.
  • the care needs of the family member you are looking after at home suddenly increase and you cannot cope.
  • the caregiver falls ill and is temporarily unable to provide care.
  • the caregiver needs a break due to mental and physical stress or simply wishes to go on a holiday.
